How it works

Every RAW file already has a picture inside it. InstantRAW shows you that one immediately, then quietly replaces it with the real thing. That is the whole idea. The rest of this page is what that means in practice.

Why other apps make you wait

A RAW file is not a photograph. It is a grid of single-colour measurements from the sensor, and turning that into an image your eye can read takes real work: reconstructing colour for every pixel, applying the white balance, mapping it to your screen. Most apps do all of that before they show you anything, which is why you sit and watch a progress bar. Some skip it by building preview files first, which is the same wait moved to the front of the evening.

The first frame

Your camera already did that work once, in-body, and saved the result inside the RAW file. It is the image you see on the back of the camera. InstantRAW pulls it out and puts it on screen, which takes a few dozen milliseconds rather than a few hundred. In practice the photograph is there before you have finished pressing the arrow key.

Then the real one, without you noticing

Behind that picture, your Mac’s graphics chip develops the actual sensor data. When it is ready it takes over. Both are drawn at exactly the same size and in exactly the same place, so nothing shifts, resizes or flickers at the moment it happens. If you watch closely you might see fine detail sharpen up. Mostly you will not see anything, which is the point. Zoom in to 100% and you are looking at real sensor data, not an enlarged preview.

The colours stay the ones you chose

There is no single correct way to turn sensor measurements into colour, which is why the same RAW file looks different in every app that opens it. Your camera already made that decision when you set the picture profile, and it saved the result in the file. That is the picture InstantRAW puts up first, so what you see is your camera’s rendering rather than someone else’s reading of it.

For Sony files there is a decoder written specifically for them here, and the render it produces is fitted to the camera’s own version of the same frame before it swaps in. So the colour does not drift when the real render takes over: it is the look you already had, on real sensor data. Every other format is developed by macOS, which makes its own choice, and that choice is not always your camera’s.

If you would rather see it than read about it

Press ⌥⌘D and a panel opens over the photograph with the actual timings for that frame, split into the stages that produced it. The same panel gives you a curtain you can drag across the picture, with this render on one side and either the camera’s own JPEG or Apple’s decoder on the other, both at the same magnification and both labelled with what they cost.

It is there because the speed and colour claims on this site are the sort that should be checkable on your own files rather than taken on trust.

It works ahead of you

While you are looking at one frame it is already preparing the next few, and the one behind you in case you go back. Arrowing through a shoot at a normal pace, the picture is generally finished before you arrive at it. When you move faster than it can keep up, you still get the camera’s own preview instantly and the full render lands a moment after you stop.

Cards, drives and network shares

An SD card, a USB-C SSD and a NAS on the other end of the office want completely different treatment, and guessing from the kind of drive it is turns out to be wrong about half the time. So InstantRAW times your volume when you open a folder and adapts to what it actually measures.

Slow media gets copied onto your Mac just ahead of where you are reading, so the card is never the thing you are waiting on. Those copies stay after you eject, which means the second pass over the same shoot is usually instant. They live in ~/Library/Caches/InstantRAW and Settings has a button to clear them out whenever you want the space back.

Why it is a small download

There is no Electron, no framework to install and nothing running in the background when the app is closed. It also does not carry its own list of supported cameras. It asks macOS what it can decode, which costs nothing and means a body added by a macOS update simply works. More on formats.

What it deliberately does not do

No catalogue, no import step, no develop module, no export. It is the pass before all of that: see the frame, keep it or bin it, and take a smaller shoot into whatever you actually edit in. Narrowness is why it opens instantly and why it costs €5.
